Understanding percentages when shopping and in life
I found this great article on NewsELA about using percentages in real life. For me, this is perfect and so practical for a math classroom. This article describes how to calculate a tip, from the math to how much you should tip based on the service. It explains the various ways to calculate a sale price or discounts. I can see myself using this article because it will definitely be engaging to students based on how realistic it is. It will help them easily make connections to their life, which will give them a much deeper understanding of percentages. Also this could easily be followed up with word problems for them to practice what they learned.

Caroline, I could easily see this article being a pre-reading assignment or a post-reading assignment. I see this article as a useful way to introduce what percentages are and what a real world application could be. I also see this article as a post-reading assignment, allowing students to read this article after learning about percentages could allow them to connect their learning to their every day lives. I think this article will be very useful in whatever way you decide to use it! Real world applications are always** useful!!
